Editing Services

Full-service editing, including developmental, line, copy editing, proofreading, and beta reading now available.

Developmental Editing: $.01/word ($100/10,000 words) – This service is considered complete/full and consists of helping new and established authors develop plot structure, dialog, pacing, and consistency. My goal is to help you produce professional quality work that engages and entertains readers without losing or overshadowing your voice. This service is excellent for newer authors who wish seek help early in their career to make sure your stories have proper character development, plot and character consistency, and has minimal fluff/chaff that is not necessary to the story. Minimum of two full passes through your manuscript included, with a third at no charge if deemed necessary.

Line Editing: $.005/word ($50/10,000 words) – Correcting overused words/phrases, run-on sentences, unnecessary redundancies, confusing perspectives or plotting, improper or unnecessary tonal shifts, loose or bland language usage, narrative issues, pacing, clarifying or enhancing your ideas, and awkward dialog. It includes some light SPAG (spelling, punctuation, and grammar) corrections, but the focus is on making sure your story content is tight, to the point, and flows well for readers so they are hooked quickly and encouraged to keep turning the pages. Two complete passes through your manuscript included.

Copy Editing: $.005/word ($50/10,000 words) – Correcting SPAG (spelling, punctuation, and grammar) is the primary focus of this service. Checks for consistencies in spelling, hyphen usage, numeral usage, capitalization, and chapter headings, as well as factual and internal (plot) consistencies. Two complete passes through your manuscript included.

Proofreading: $50/10,000 words – Similar to editing, but focused solely on SPAG, formatting, missing/double words and spaces, and as a final polish to an already-edited manuscript. Single pass through your manuscript included, second and third passes at a reduced rate if necessary.

About me: My name is Travis Hill, and I am the author of 30 published titles (12 novels, 9 novellas, and 10 short stories). Due to recent life changes, I am setting aside my own writing to focus on editing/proofreading for authors while I finish my degree in Creative Writing (with a minor in English). While I may be a newer figure in editing, I have experience on both sides of the table as a writer and an editor/proofreader. As an author, I have used more than a dozen editors to help with my own books, and I understand that no matter how skilled an author is, there comes a point where I have read my own words so many times that normally easy to spot errors or inconsistencies slip by. Fresh eyes and a fresh perspective are necessary to create a tight, polished body of work that will both engage and entertain readers.

I enjoy talking to authors during the feeling-out stage to make sure we are a good fit, and accept sample chapters to let you see what kind of work you can expect from me.

My primary passions are within the Science Fiction genre: alien invasions, rogue AI, time travel, space operas, thrillers, hard science fiction, dystopias, post-apocalypse, and more. I have read science fiction since I was a child, and the majority of my published works are within this genre. I know from experience how hard it is to find an editor who is well-versed in Sci-Fi, especially concerning complex plots, sweeping epic storylines, series, and out-of-the-box ideas.

Fantasy: Typically I prefer adult fantasy, including magical realism, classic Tolkien stories (“Dungeons & Dragons” high fantasy), urban fantasy, and politically driven fantasy (“Game of Thrones”), but I am very comfortable in both Young Adult and Mid-Grade fantasy as well.

Crime Fiction: I have a special place in my heart for noir, organized crime, and hardboiled crime fiction. I have real-world experience in certain categories such as jail/prison, drug trafficking and drug abuse, and probation/parole. I enjoy the darker elements of crime fiction, but am more than willing to work with you on lighter or more uplifting themes.

I am also more than willing to work in other genres, including Historical Fiction, Mysteries, Adventure, and Romance. I am pro-LGTBQ, and absolutely love stories with these themes. Diversity is important to me, and I believe all voices should be heard, regardless of race, gender, culture, and sexual identity.

If you feel I am a good fit for your project, I will ask for a sample chapter to help me determine which service is best for you (and you may tell me up front if you wish to use a specific service).
